Here at ActionCOACH Newry, we are big on goal setting. Approaching this in a SMART way is crucial. SMART goals stand for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

THE BREAKDOWN

S | Specific

For a goal to be effective, it needs to be specific. It answers questions such as: what needs to be accomplished? What steps need to be taken to achieve it? Why is this goal important?

M | Measurable

Making sure your goals are measurable makes it easy to track your progress. It also helps you to know when you’ve achieved your goal. Including measurable and trackable benchmarks help to make your objectives more impactful. A measurable goal show ask questions including: how much? How many?

A | Achievable

This step serves as a reality check. Your goals need to be realistic – is it actually able to be accomplished? You should consider constraints such as financial factors and travel restrictions etc.

R | Relevant

Here, you need to ask yourself how the goal you’re setting fits into the big picture. Questions you should ask (and should be answered as yes) include: is this worthwhile? Is the timing right?

T | Time-Bound

This asks questions such as… when do you start implementing the steps towards achieving your goal? How long will it take? When will it finish?

BENEFITS

By using the SMART framework, you can set attainable goals to help ensure your success. It helps to provide focus and clarity to executing these goals and easy to implement within the workplace.
