EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

It’s common knowledge that a team is made up of a group of individuals – but communicating with each person in their preferred style is crucial to having an effective team.

If you are unsure how you or each member of your team best works and communicates, then you should consider completing a DISC assessment. A DISC assessment consists of a short 15 minute long questionnaire in which you will be asked personality based questions. The results will demonstrate how you best work and communicate by breaking down your personality. 

DISC ASSESSMENT

For those who aren’t familiar with the DISC assessment, results are broken into four categories; (D), (I), (S), (C). Each letter stands for a personality type as so:

D | Dominant.

I | Influencer.

S | Steady.

C | Conscientious. 

THE BREAKDOWN

Individuals who primarily fit into the ‘D’ category are ‘big picture’ people. They are confident, straight to the point and can be at times blunt or demanding. Gordon Ramsey is a typical example of a ‘D’ personality type. When communicating with a ‘D’ you want to upfront and honest with them. Get straight to the point, avoid repetition, and try to focus on solutions rather than problems.

Those who fit within the ‘I’ quadrant are generally enthusiastic, energetic and optimistic. They are usually very influential and persuasive individuals – and want to be friends with EVERYONE. When communicating with an ‘I’, you want to allow some extra time for chit-chat. They love to hear your experiences, respond to positivity and always want to talk themselves. It’s important not to interrupt them or overload them with details.

The ’S’ category usually consist of people who are loyal, dependable and sincere. They are calm yet deliberate and dislike being rushed. When communicating with a ’S’, you want to make sure you express interest in what they are doing and be as personal and genuine as possible. This group of people dislike confrontation – so avoid this at all costs. Make sure to be polite, and ensure time to provide clarification where needed.

‘C’ is the fourth quadrant in the DISC profile and prioritise quality and competency in everything they do. They are independent, want to know details in everything, and hate being wrong. When communicating with the ‘C’ style, focus on facts and detail. Avoid emotional language when speaking or general chit-chat.
